Thirteen individuals from Colorado County met on July 16, 2002 to form a new group they now call, "Colorado County Friends of Aviation (CCFA)." The group’s intention is to advance public understanding and interest in aviation through educational and charitable means and to help promote area airports by increasing aviation-related activities throughout Colorado County.

"We would like to see our local airports host more activities for the benefit of the public, especially the youth of our communities," says CCFA chairman Troy Millican, M.D.

Columbus City Manager David Stall supports the group’s effort. "Public airports of any size can generate positive economic benefits for their community. I’m pleased to see this group formed and our citizens take an active interest in local aviation," Stall said.

CCFA is also exploring local youth interest in creating a local Civil Air Patrol squadron. The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is the civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and offers aviation-related programs for boys and girls beginning at sixth grade, as well as adults. The CAP cadet program is also jointly affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America Explorers. Currently the nearest CAP squadron is located in Bellville, where several members of our community are already actively involved.

Several CCFA members hope to establish a flying club within the next several months.

The CCFA founding meeting was hosted by Mr. Jay Harvey, owner of Magnolia Personal Care, in the dining room of Magnolia Place at 1216 Montezuma in Columbus.
