Introduction

The census was taken between June 6 and September 13, 1870 by Jacob H. Baldwin, Jr.. When the pages were numbered, they were not arranged in chronological order. What was evidently the first page Baldwin recorded was finally assigned page number 78A. There are no pages numbered 77B, 96A, or 97B. It is not clear whether there ever were such pages.
We have listed the persons recorded in the census both in the same order in which they appear in the manuscript version of the census and in alphabetical order. When they were known, modern or correct spellings of surnames have been included in square brackets. Personal information for each group member appears in parenthesis. For nearly all persons, such information includes age, gender, color or race, and birthplace.
There were several errors or anomalies in numbering households and pages, all of which we have reproduced. The page that is now numbered 6B seems to be out of place. Accordingly, we have inserted it in what seems to us to be its proper place, between pages 4B and 5A.
The census taker also declared that some people who seemingly have masculine first names were females and that some people who seemingly have feminine first names were males. We have not altered these descriptions, even when we were quite sure that the census taker was wrong.
