History of the Weimar
High School Football Program

by Buddy Yoder and Bill Stein

Introduction

After single games in 1921 and 1922, both of which the team lost by wide margins, Weimar High School began fielding football teams for regularly-scheduled interscholastic competition in 1926. Known as the Wildcats, in its early years, the team struggled for wins. In 1939, the school decided to abandon eleven-man competition in favor of six-man football.

In the six-man leagues, Weimar instantly became a winner. The arrival of the school’s greatest star, Kenneth Konz, in 1943, propelled Weimar into the playoffs for the first time. Konz, in his freshman year, and his brother Max Konz, led the Wildcats to their first undefeated season and first district championship. In his remaining three seasons, the younger Konz would lead the team to two more district titles. Weimar lost the title only in 1944, when Konz was forced to miss two district games, each of which the Wildcats lost.

The year after Konz graduated, 1947, the team returned to eleven-man football, and failed to win a game. The team floundered for the next decade, consistently losing more games than they won. In 1957, under new coach Roy J. Lierman, the Wildcats won nine of their ten games, but finished second in the district to Hallettsville. The team played fairly well in 1958, however the season was marred by the decision of the school board, in October, to forfeit the team's scheduled district game with Bloomington on November 7 because Bloomington's team was racially integrated. The following year, Weimar again forfeited to Bloomington.

In 1960, Weimar won its first eleven-man-football district championship, beating their arch-rival from the nearby town of Schulenburg in the final game to take the title. Unfortunately, they lost the playoff opener. In the next dozen years, under coaches Edsel Nix and Robert Gall, the Wildcats played consistently well, going to the playoffs four times. Included in that run was a strange season in 1972, when the team went 0-5-1 in non-district play, but won all four of its district games to win the championship. In each of the playoff years, however, the Wildcats were defeated in the first round.

Then came a twenty-year drought. The team had some winning seasons, but never advanced to the playoffs. The low points were back-to-back 1-9 seasons in 1978 and 1979 (with the only victories each year coming over the Texas School for the Deaf), and a winless, 0-10 campaign in 1990. The Wildcats finally broke through in 1992, making the playoffs but again losing in the first round. They repeated that experience in 1996, 1999, and 2004. However, not even the expanded format of the late twentieth century, with three teams from each district advancing, has enabled Weimar to consistently make the playoffs, and they are still awaiting their first eleven-man football playoff victory.
