Colorado County Confederate Soldiers

compiled by Bill Stein, Dorothy Albrecht, Ernest Mae Seaholm, and Tracey Wegenhoft

(Originally appeared in Nesbitt Memorial Library Journal, vol. 7, no. 2, pp. 111-142, slightly modified for this presentation)

Though to thoroughly measure the impact of the Civil War on the county, one must compile a comprehensive list of Colorado County men who served in the Confederate military, doing so is virtually impossible. Many of the numerous problems which present themselves seem insoluble. First, one must decide what constitutes a "Colorado County man." The clearest and best answer, it seemed to me, was to designate those men listed on Schedule 1 of the Eighth Census of the United States (1860) for Colorado County as "Colorado County men" and ignore all others. Unhappily, this necessitated omitting from consideration many men known to have served and known to have spent most of their lives before and after 1860 in the county, including Henry Cameron McNeill, Robert Earl Stafford, John Wegenhoft, Felix Grundy Mahon, and his brother, James Norfleet Mahon, for none appeared on the 1860 census. It also meant that men who would spend most of their lives in the county, but who are known to have moved to it in the few months after the census was taken but before the war broke out, men like George Andrew Gegenworth, also had to be omitted.

That painful and somewhat arbitrary decision having been taken, it next became necessary to match the men on the 1860 census to the men who served in the Confederate army. Using the Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers who Served in Organizations from the State of Texas, National Archives Microfilm Publication No. 323, or else the actual muster rolls from which the service records were compiled, each potential soldier's name was compared to similar or identical names in the service records. No man was admitted to the final list of Confederate soldiers unless corroborating evidence in the form of his age, place of enlistment, place of residence, etc., was present. This standard forced the omission of many likely soldiers, particularly among those men with very common surnames. Many others, it must be presumed, were omitted because the spellings of their surnames were so severely corrupted that their service records could not be located.

Still, 517 Colorado County men could reasonably be identified as Confederate soldiers. Each soldier's name is followed by the highest rank he is known to have achieved (in parenthesis), his occupation and age as given on the 1860 census, and a summary of his military career.
