The so-called Scherer diary is actually a brief autobiography. He also states that he helped in some way to attract the Baker brothers and their newspaper to Columbus, and that he provided the name for the newspaper (see p. 45). Ten acres, the exact amount deeded to the Harvey's Creek school by Adkins, was the most that a school could own without paying taxes.
