Twelfth Census of the United States (1900)
Colorado County, Texas

Introduction and Table of Contents

created by Jennie Sue Muggli, with Matt Ross, Heather Wolston, Amber Hollywood, and Bill Stein

Introduction

The 1900 census of Colorado County is divided into fourteen sections, or "enumeration districts." Each district was surveyed by one of fourteen individuals in June 1900. For no apparent reason, the districts were numbered from 14 through 27 (rather than one through fourteen as might be expected). The districts and their geographic areas were:

The official population of Colorado County in 1900, as released by the federal government, was 22,203. In fact, the county’s census takers listed 22,205 individuals. A census page, when full, contained information on fifty persons (numbered either 1 through 50 or 51 through 100). Alice E. Allen, who took the census in Weimar, added a fifty-first person to two of her pages, numbering each added person “101.” Apparently, neither of those persons was counted by the government.

These lines were left blank by the various census takers:

We have chosen to present our index in two ways: (1) in the same order as the original census, and divided into the same enumeration districts, and (2) in alphabetical order, by surname. Our list can be electronically searched (by using "Ctrl F"), but you should be aware of the fact that either we or the census taker might have spelled any person's name incorrectly. In cases where we knew the latter was true, we added the correct spelling in square brackets. We also included enough information, in parenthesis to the right of each name, to identify each person with a reasonable degree of certainty. Of course, much more information about every person was included on the census. To the right of the parenthetical insertion, we have placed the number of the enumeration district, the page number, and the line number on which the entry for the person appears.
