At first, Gail Borden Johnson took a job on an existing newspaper, the Houston Telegraph. A month later, he and his father established the Houston Post. This newspaper failed in late 1884, but in early 1885 another Houston Post was established, and it flourished for more than a century (see Colorado Citizen, January 1, 1880; Speer, ed., The Encyclopedia of the New West, pp. 126-127).
