Only a few months earlier, Gillmore had lost the race for mayor of Columbus to Benjamin M. Baker by a scant 21 votes. In addition to his political career, he ran a gun shop on Spring Street, where had accidentally shot himself in the hand only two months earlier. After his death, his wife took in boarders, and his sixteen-year-old son, John, took over the gun shop (see Colorado Citizen, March 18, 1875, June 5, 1879, October 9, 1879, January 8, 1880, January 29, 1880).
